Discussion Action Points
ST ANN’S WELL GARDENS
SHRUBBERY:
The bushes at the end of the building have been cut back. The bushes outside the café are also too overgrown and heavy and cut out sight lines. Friends of group should be consulted as to what they would like to replace the heavy shrubbery.
ACTION - The issue of the shrubbery and security etc was not brought up at the last Friends of St Ann’s Well Gardens meeting but it will be brought up at the next. – CARRIED OVER. – Discharged – shrubbery has been cut back.
LIGHTING:
Parks projects have agreed to look at improved lighting and aim for a costed design. As yet no funding has been identified for this.
David Ince stated that the tennis courts are well used during weekends and evenings when it is light enough. DI has been investigating the possibility of having the courts floodlit to reduce ASB and to make it safer for the young people who practice on their own in the evenings. Local residents were consulted via a mail out. There were few replies but those that were received were positive. The courts are open until 8.00pm, however the courts in Hove Park are open to 10.00pm. This may be because they are more sheltered. Funding from the Sports Lottery and Sport England has been considered but the application/decision process takes too long. The Police stated that it is easier to locate groups of youth quickly with the aid of lighting and the more people can be encouraged to use the parks for its intended purpose the better it is for community safety.
ACTIONS – Issue to be kept on the agenda. Student Officers to ask their Sergeant about the suitability of this issue for a Community Oriented Problem Solving Project.
SPEEDING: Vehicles are frequently seen speeding along The Drive on to Wilbury Avenue. Residents report that it is difficult to cross the road from White Lodge as a van obscures the view of the road. The recent road works have reduced speeding and the traffic lights on the Upper Drive seem to work well to slow the traffic down.
ACTION – Daren Egan to ask RPU about signs that could be left out all the time to remind people about speeding or to advise that speed checks are carried out regularly in the area. – CARRIED OVER. – DISCHARGED: PCSO Kayleigh Pierce contacted Mark Dunn from Traffic Management in the Roads Policing Unit at Haywards Heath. He has agreed that Hove is first in line for ‘Check Your Speed’ signs and will be erected in Montefiore Road and Somerhill Road.
ACTION – Ayas Fallon Khan and Daren Egan to arrange a meeting with the Head Teachers from the local schools to discuss the issue, highlight the strength of feeling from the public, represented by the LAT. – CARRIED OVER: Daren Egan to contact Headteachers from Cardinal Newman and Cottesmore to arrange meeting.
ACTION – Simon Bannister to contact Safer Routes to Schools Officer to look at the safety of the crossings etc – CARRIED OVER: Update for next meeting.
ACTION – PCSO Kayleigh Pierce to use SID on Montefiore Road in the next couple of weeks. Kayleigh to send date for this action to Ayas Fallon Khan in advance. – DISCHARGED: PCSO Pierce used SID on 2nd March.
NOTICEBOARDS:The gardener’s supervisor has said that it is fine for groups to display items. The Furze Croft board has a lot of condensation and the notices cannot be read. The key to open the board has not been found.
ACTION) – The condition of the boards to be raised at Friends of St Ann’s Well Gardens by Juliete Parissi
POLICE UPDATE:
PCSO Freya Carter was introduced as the new PCSO for the area, working alongside PCSO Kayleigh Pierce.
PC Thompson presented the crime figures. Criminal damage was up on last month’s figures. Research had been carried out in order to identify patterns etc but there were none. This will be monitored closely over the next couple of months.
NPT are running a Day of Action for Goldsmid ward on Thursday 5th March. Communities Against Drugs will carry out a leaflet drop in the area to encourage reporting through the use of prepaid anonymous reporting cards.
PARKING SOMERHILL SCHOOL:
The School Crossing Patrol Officer started in Somerhill Road on Monday 10th November. His name is Derek Lynch. The lights are not working properly on the school crossing. Highways have been contacted twice regarding this issue but nothing has been done.
ACTION)- PCSOs to contact Highways and invite a representative to the next meeting.
AOB:
Dustbin lorries are having difficulties turning in to the White Lodge car park. A lorry knocked down one of the brick piers outside the building about three years ago and the residents were left with a £400 bill. It is believed that double yellow lines outside the building would help.
Dog fouling – noted that it is particularly bad by the law courts. It was also noted that when PCSOs are allowed to issue FPNs for this offence they will have to witness it themselves before issuing a ticket.
A block of flats on Wilbury Avenue often has rubbish outside the building and in the past this has caused problems with vermin.
ACTION) – Ayas Fallon-Khan to email the Environment Directorate.
ACTION) Mick Sutton from City Clean to be invited to the next meeting. Ayas Fallon-Khan to contact the Environment Department.
PRIORITY SETTING:
Each LAT is being asked to come up with their top three local priorities during their meetings. These priorities will be taken by the police and displayed on the Sussex Police Website for local residents to view. The police and their partners will work to resolve these issues.
The priorities were set as:
1. Action on speeding vehicles:
To reduce the speed of vehicles in hotspots across the ward especially during rush hour times. This will be achieved through the use of SID, the two area petitions. SID should be used approx. 5 – 6 days during a four week period.
2. Flytipping
To eradicate flytipping from the local area. Simon Bannister is to find out from colleagues which areas have reported incidents of flytipping. To focus on areas around the Conservatory on The Drive and Janiston Court.
3. Behaviour of school children on the way to and from school.
School patrols will be increased. The Neighbourhood Schools Officer will be informed and will be asked to speak to children re. personal safety and consideration for road users.
4. Cycling on the pavement and cycling without lights.Days of action and enforcement will be planned.
ACTION) – Ayas Fallon-Khan to email the Environment Directorate.
ACTION) Mick Sutton from City Clean to be invited to the next meeting. Ayas Fallon-Khan to contact the Environment Department. ACTION: 10 minutes will be set aside at the end of every LAT meeting to decide upon the three local priorities for the next six weeks.
Date of next meeting: Monday 1st June at 6.30pm. St Ann’s Well Gardens Cafe.
